The “I do” SL Business

According to Linden Labs®, 60.000 SL residents are today married in world. And each year thousands of couples decide to prove their love by joining in the link of marriage. A juicy business some have learned to take advantage of. TLG took a look at how a simple “I love you” has turned into a linden dollar-making machine.

“Silk, satin, cotton or rags” ? The old nursery rhyme is still completely relevant in SL. Weddings come in all shapes and sizes and – just as in RL, the style of wedding will depend on the size of your purse.

Once the emotion of the “yes” has passed and the date is finally set, everything remains to be done. Even if organizing the wedding of your dreams is less hard than in real life, it’s still a strain on the nerves - not only do you have to find the perfect wedding attire but you also have to organize the ideal reception to invite all your friends.

The package prices run from L$5000  with only the wedding ceremony to L$40.000 for a personalized and luxurious package...

Those who are lucky enough not to have a limit on their budget will call a wedding professional. Many companies in Second Life® have specialized in organizing weddings, among which JCNY, Charming Biginning, Love Knot Weddings or Rose Garden for the oldest. Their goal? Make your Second Life Wedding a dream come true! They offer ready made packages for varying budgets. These include the ceremony and the reception’s platform decorated according to your color complete with pose balls for two or three hours, the buffet and the cake. You also will have officiant services, your personal assistant to help you shop for your wedding attire, a photograph and a wedding coordinator. These packages may also include the rehearsals to get things just right before the wedding ceremony, the invitations, the fireworks, the marriage certificate and even your residence for the honeymoon. The package prices run from 5000 Lindens (L$) with only the wedding ceremony to L$40.000 for a personalized and luxurious package. For a complete package the average price is L$12.000. Don’t forget to check out lots of places and compare the different notecards because the prices are free in Second Life®.

Does this mean that if you don’t have L$12000, you will have to satisfy yourself – and your partner - with the (rather cheap) L$20 partnering proposed by Second Life?

Luckily, there are other solutions.

"An SL wedding can be stressful"

Pammie Charming, who has been planning weddings for 2 and a half years in SL, opens her doors to TLG readers at Charming beginning, siren grotto.

Why have you chosen this wedding activity?

Well, because I love seeing people happy. I enjoy meeting people, love decorating the place up with pretty flowers. I'm sappy! I'm a sucker for a love story. A dear friend of mine is a minister in RL and got me interested in doing weddings. I have gotten wedding ceremonies from friends, the internet, and I have even revamped some custom ceremonies.

How many weddings have you officiated ?

Probably close to 500 now.  I average about 13-15 per month.

My largest package runs 10.250 for the works

What do you think about getting married in SL ?

Many in SL probably get married for the wrong reasons. I see a lot of separations. I try to check up profiles on some of my couples and am sad to see that 8-10 of my couples are no longer married. But I – and my husband – are the living proof that sl marriages can work.

Why do people ask for a wedding planner?

Just like a RL wedding, an SL wedding can be stressful. So the planner helps them organize, tells them what they need to buy for the type of wedding they are wanting.
